The barriers are an additional element of the bed. If they are not fitted, this does not affect beds construction. So if the barriers are not fitted the bed is still stable.

Small cracks on the wood can appear and this will not affect bed stability. This is normal for natural wood especially when furniture is being kept in a warm and dry room.
